Gimmick or Great Resto? When our lovely Belgian friend and fellow critic, L'Ecogourmande suggested this place in the middle of the Bois de la Cambre (woods in the middle of Brussels) to which you have to catch a cable ferry, I was a little concerned. What was the food going to be like? I needn't have worried!
The Chalet Robinson is a take on the Swiss Robinson family and this quaint chalet, constructed of wood dates from the 1890s (re-built recently) and is located on a small island in the middle of the woods. There is a cable operated ferry (1 Euro), that takes you there. On a sunny Brussels day, you are surrounded by ducks, swans and other water fowl as you wend your way across the tiny lake.
The restaurant itself is sleek, with black tables and big windows. The walls are minimal white. But with the big expansive views who needs distractions. Booking is essential! It was a busy sunday Lunch when we arrived with Flemish F, Flemish K and French D. We had to wait a little for the waitress (they were busy) and so when she arrived we ordered quickly. We all opted for fish..
I had Sole with butter.. it was divine. It was accompanied by a French Sauvignon. Crisp and perfect for the fish!
The desserts are equally good here. I had an apple and hazlenut tart. May I say it was excellent? Yes it was.
Decor - minimal and park like.
Service - friendly but a little slow
Clientele - mixed, families, gays and everything in between.
Dress Code - relaxed
Cost - reasonable (Flemish F picked up the tab).
